Cobham Heritage Day 2007
Saturday 8th September

Opening of the 2007 Heritage Day by the MayorAll the hard work for this year's Heritage Day all proved worthwhile when the Mayor of Elmbridge, Mrs Rosemary Dane officially opened the second Cobham Heritage Day on Saturday.

The weather was good which encouraged a few thousand people to visit the numerous stalls and attractions in Church Street, St Andrews Church and the surrounding area.

The stalls ranged from local organisations such as the Cobham WI, the Guides and the Cobham & Downside Residents Association to arts and crafts stalls such as Christina Scott, Daphne Brown and Sandpiper Gems.

Phillippe & PhilloppeThere was entertainment and attractions for both children and grown ups.

Making a welcome return were Phillippe and Philloppe. These unusual street entertainers kept everyone amused throughout the day. Some of the time they were on stilts and dressed as old fashioned policeman at other times they were cycling about on penny-farthing bicycles.

All aboard the Steam EngineFace PaintingOther attractions for the children included Punch and Judy, Face Painting and Pony Rides. For the grown ups there was the Art display by the Cobham Art Group, Vintage Cars and a real full sized Steam Engine. A jazz band played throughout the day which added to the atmosphere.

Wedding DisplaySt Andrew's Church took an active part in the day. The sound of Church Bells could be heard regularly thanks to the bell ringers and a wedding display was also held in the Church. This display included lots of wedding photographs and even wedding dresses.

With all this activity it was fortunate that additional refreshments had been laid on. A "Barber-Q" was on hand outside the Village Barbers in Church Street and Cream Teas, Chocolate Fountain, Smoothies and Burgers were available behind the Church at Church Gate House.

Start of the Duck RaceThe day culminated in the great Cobham Duck Race. This took place on the river Mole between the Cobham Mill and the La Capana. There was such a demand for Ducks this year that two races were held. Thousands of ducks bobbed down the river all hoping to win one of the ten prizes for their sponsors. Everyone has been very pleased with the success of this years Cobham Heritage Day and the Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust would like to thank everyone who took part and made the day so special.
