Cobham Heritage Day 2008
Saturday 13th September

Cobham Heritage Day proved popular once again this year. The Mayor of Elmbridge, Councilor Nigel Cooper accompanied by the Lady Mayoress officially opened the third Cobham Heritage Day on Saturday at 11am.

The regular stalls along with many new ones lined Church Street and the path through the churchyard to Church Gate House. Many local organisations were represented such as the Cobham WI, Envisage and the Cobham & Downside Residents Association. Numerous stalls had interesting items for sale including arts and crafts and food.

Phillippe & PhilloppeThere was entertainment and attractions for both children and grown ups. Phillippe and Philloppe were in attendance again. These unusual street entertainers combine stilt walking and juggling to keep everyone amused throughout the day.

The children enjoyed the traditional attractions such as Punch and Judy, Face Painting and Pony Rides.

Punch and judyFor the grown ups there was the Art display by the Cobham Art Group, Vintage Cars, a real full sized Steam Engine and a vintage red bus from the Cobham Bus Museum. A jazz band played throughout the day to get everyone in the party spirit. And in the Church Yard an Accordian Orchestra played.

The Cobham Mill was working hard. This fully restored working Water Mill provided demonstrations on how flour could be made using the power of the river.

Church Bell RingingSt Andrew's Church took an active part in the day once again. The Church Bells could be heard regularly thanks to the bell ringers and St Andrew’s Youth (SAY) performed in the Church “For One Night Only” - Song and Dance from West End Musicals.

With all this activity it was fortunate that refreshments had been laid on.

Start of the Duck RaceThe day culminated in the great Cobham Duck Race. This took place on the river Mole between the Cobham Mill and the La Capana. Thousands of ducks bobbed down the river all hoping to win one of the prizes for their sponsors. The winning Duck Race tickets can be found by clicking here Race Results.

Everyone has been very pleased with the success of this years Cobham Heritage Day and the Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust would like to thank everyone who took part and made the day so special.

We would also like to thank the many organisations and businesses who took part and provided contributions to the tombola and the other prizes. A special thank you goes to the Duck Race sponsors Knight Frank and Painshill Park who sponsored the opening of the Gardens.

In addition, a special thanks to Clive Friend, Gerry Acher and Richard Mulhall who provided the pictures to remember the day by.
