Cobham Heritage Day 2009
Saturday 12th September

Cobham Heritage Day proved even more popular this year and once again we were blessed with delightful weather. The Mayor and Mayoress of Elmbridge, Councilor and Mrs James Vickers officially opened the fourth Cobham Heritage Day on Saturday at 11am.

As in previous years Church Street was closed to traffic and was lined with interesting and varied stalls. The stalls continued through the churchyard and through to Church Gate House where Cream Teas were served.

In the car park of Church Gate House was an impressive collection of classic cars. This attracted many admiring glances.

Many local organisations joined the stall holders to promote their good causes and to help collect funds for their work.

Cobham Heritage Day featured many free attractions for both children and grown ups. Peet Cooper the Jester played the fool and got the audience to help him get on to his stilts before he did his fire eating tricks. Alan Wiseman, our very own Town Crier kept everyone informed of the events throughout the day.

The children enjoyed the traditional attractions such as Punch and Judy, Face Painting and Pony Rides. Magic Mikey gave away balloons sculptured into familiar animals.

For the grown ups there was the Art display by the Cobham Art Group, Classic Cars, a real full sized Steam Engine and a mobile Fairground organ. A jazz band played throughout the day to get everyone in the party mood.

The Cobham Mill was in action again. Grinding corn into flour with just the power of the river. The fully restored working Water Mill provided demonstrations throughout the day.

St Andrew's Church presented a "Songs of Praise" performance during the afternoon with the church choir and musicians and the Church Bells could be heard regularly thanks to the bell ringers.

The day culminated in the great Cobham Duck Race sponsored by Knight Frank Estate Agents. This took place on the river Mole between the Cobham Mill and the La Capana Restaurant. Thousands of ducks began the journey from the Mill but many got caught up in the reed beds by the Mill. However, the ducks battled on and eventually we had our winners. A rousing end to the day was provided by the Cobham Band's Prom celebration held in the Church in the evening. This was so successful that we intend to repeat this in future years.

Once again we have all been thrilled by the success of this years Cobham Heritage Day. This event wouldn't be possible without the hard work of our volunteers and the support of our sponsors.
