Cobham Remembers - Introduction

Surrey and the Great War

Cobham Heritage was actively involved in the 'Cobham Remembers' project, part of the Surrey in the Great War: A County Remembers project run by the Surrey History Centre.

Surrey in the Great War: A County Remembers was a four year project run by Surrey Heritage and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, to research the backgrounds of those whose names appear on local war memorials and to discover how the 1914-1918 conflict affected those left behind on the Home Front. You can find out more about the Surrey wide project at their website: www.surreyinthegreatwar.org.uk

3D Book Image v1.3 w400 This website contains a selection of the articles written and photographs collected by the project volunteers together with details of those who lived in and around Cobham and lost their lives in the so-called Great War. Military records available to researchers provide much background of those who fought but not much can be found about the villagers who stayed behind and we have attempted to fill that gap. In doing so we hope that we have created some sense of that far off time.

A book written by two members of the group is available for sale through our online shop.

Although the Cobham Remembers project was focused on the first world war we are also interested in information and photographs relating to the second world war.

The Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust was the instigator for adding the memorial plaque at the Tilt in 2009 and worked with Elmbridge Borough Council to rejuvenate the avenue of cherry trees on the Tilt.
