Riverhill Poetry Competition

Riverhill Poetry Competition WinnersWe have been very pleased with the fantastic response to our Riverhill "On the Riverbank" poetry competition. We received over 200 entries and the standard was very high.

The prizes were awarded during this year’s Cobham Heritage Day on the 14th Sept 2013 and naturally the ceremony took place on the Riverhill platform overlooking the river. We would like to thank Newcourt Residential who kindly sponsored the competition.

For more details and to read the winning poems, visit the Riverhill website (www.riverhill.org.uk) by clicking here. A video of the prize giving can also be seen.

Heritage Day 2013 Attractions

The 8th Cobham Heritage Day will be taking place on Saturday 14th September 2013 and looks to be even more fun than last year.

There will be lots of attractions and stalls to appeal to the whole family. Many of our regular stallholders will be with us once again plus a number of new ones. Stalls range from local organisations and charities providing information, stalls featuring childrens games and activities through to commercial stalls offering crafts, art, jewellery, cakes and all sorts of other interesting and unusual gifts.

Church Gate House gardens will have stalls and activities especially suited to children. So while the children are occupied, the adults can take a breather with a nice cup of tea or coffee and a piece of cake.

We have expanded the activities taking place on the Leg O'Mutton Field this year. Once again we have the Classic Car and Motorbike Show and the Autumn Flower Show. Added to this we have an Art Exhibition presented by the R C Sheriff Trust, Fencing demonstrations, Maypole dancing, a barrel organ, Morris dancing, model traction engine, an animal petting farm and Shetland ponies.

Church Street also has plenty of attractions including the ever popular stilt walkers, jazz band and Pimms stall. Magic Mikey will be making his balloon animals for the children to take away and we hope to have a Fire engine on display (subject to operational constraints). Two gardens will be opening for a small charge which will give visitors an opportunity to see gardens normally hidden from view.

Nicholas OwenThe major event comes at 4pm when the great Cobham Duck Race, sponsored by Knight Frank Estate Agents, takes place between the Cobham Mill and the Riverhill Platform. More than 6000 ducks race down the river Mole and the first 11 to reach the finish line receive a prize. First prize is £250. Duck tickets are available for just £1 each from the Cobham Heritage Trust stall in Church Street and Knight Frank Estate Agents. Nicholas Owen the journalist and BBC and ITN News presenter will be catching the winning ducks alongside Charles Davenport from Knight Frank.

The Cobham Chamber of Commerce and twenty Cobham Businesses are sponsoring an additional duck race which will take place at 3:50pm just before the main duck race. Associated with this is the Hunt the Duck competition which is being run by the Cobham Chamber of Commerce. For more details see the Cobham Village website at www.cobhamvillage.co.uk

Cobham Heritage Day is a great day out for all the family and the profits from the day are used to help Cobham Heritage fund special projects like the Riverhill project completed this year.

Come and visit the Cobham Heritage Stand in Church Street near the Jazz Band and find out more about the Trust and how you could become a member and pehaps get involved with a future project.
